What is a Special Disability Trust? ("SDT")

A SDT is restricted to a primary beneficiary who must have a severe disability as defined in the Social Security Act 1991 s 1209L.

It is one of the few ways to gift money (up to $500,000) from an immediate family member and avoid the gift being captured in their age pension assets test which would lower the pension they could receive on retiring.

A specific trust deed is required that satisfies the Model Rules provided by Services Australia.
